Where Bitcoin Restaurants Are in 2026: 7,168 Venues in 102 Countries
Which countries have the most restaurants that accept bitcoin? On 24 October 2026 we pulled every food and drink venue listed on BTC Map, the map of places that accept bitcoin: restaurants, bars, cafés, pubs, fast-food places, bakeries and ice cream shops. The total is 7,168 venues in 102 countries. Here is the ranking, how we counted, and what it means if you run a restaurant.
The top countries
Venues that accept bitcoin, and how many of them were verified on BTC Map in the last 12 months:
- United States: 3,118 venues (310 of them are one chain, Steak 'n Shake), 2,914 verified
- El Salvador: 493 venues, 101 verified
- Brazil: 347 venues, 87 verified
- Italy: 244 venues, 46 verified
- Thailand: 221 venues, 148 verified
- South Africa: 196 venues, 40 verified
- Switzerland: 140 venues, 61 verified
- Costa Rica: 126 venues, 18 verified
- Germany: 124 venues, 49 verified
- United Kingdom: 103 venues, 46 verified
- Czechia: 96 venues, 36 verified
- France: 94 venues, 38 verified
- Netherlands: 94 venues, 61 verified
Smaller markets are far down the list: Austria has 46, Malta 9 and Ireland 2.
What the numbers hide
- "Verified" means someone confirmed on BTC Map within the last year that the venue still takes bitcoin. Venues that were never re-checked may have stopped. Thailand (148 of 221) and the Netherlands (61 of 94) are mostly fresh; Costa Rica (18 of 126) and Guatemala (12 of 82) are mostly old entries.
- German-speaking Europe is the largest cluster on the continent: Germany, Switzerland and Austria together have 310 venues, many of them driven by local communities.
- 493 venues sit on coastlines or small islands that fall outside simplified country borders, so every country count in the ranking is a minimum.
- A venue on the map is not a venue where people pay in bitcoin every day. The map measures willingness and visibility, not volume.
How we counted
Source: BTC Map (btcmap.org), whose data comes from OpenStreetMap. We took every place listed on BTC Map, which only lists places that accept bitcoin, whose category is food or drink, and left out deleted listings. Each venue was assigned to a country with the Natural Earth 1:50m borders. Malta and Ireland were re-counted with exact OpenStreetMap borders, because simplified borders miss venues on small islands and coastlines. Data pulled on 24 October 2026. If you run a restaurant: how to get found by bitcoin customers
- Check whether you are already on BTC Map: search your venue's name at btcmap.org. If you are not there, add the venue by following the current "add location" instructions on btcmap.org (the map takes its data from OpenStreetMap).
- Make sure the OpenStreetMap entry says what you accept: bitcoin on-chain, Lightning, or both.
- Get it verified: ask a regular, or confirm the entry yourself through the map's verification flow. A fresh verification tells people searching that the listing is current.
- Accept payments without a middleman. BTCPay Server is open source and non-custodial: funds go straight to your own wallet. Start with on-chain; add Lightning when you have the time to look after it.
- Tell guests. A sticker at the door and one line on the menu do more than the map alone.
Make the menu match
Bitcoin customers often scan before they sit down. A video menu shows each dish in a few seconds and carries a "Bitcoin accepted" badge linked to your BTC Map listing. We built that at menu.video, and we take bitcoin ourselves through BTCPay Server (on-chain today, Lightning coming soon), with 21 founding spots for venues that already accept it.
